About
TAPE
TAPE Community Music and Film, based in Old Colwyn, has recently celebrated the end of the research and development phase of its third feature film (and the first to be mostly animated) with an exhibition touring North Wales, showcasing the region-wide co-created response surrounding it.
Below the Waves will be based on a script co-written by over fifty people in the local community. It is set in or around the seaside town of Conwy and takes inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of the North Wales coastline: from the curse of the Conwy mermaid to the legend of Llys Helyg.
The story follows Ffion, a young woman who has ambitions to go to university but worries what would happen to her obsessed adventurer grandmother Angharad (who is showing signs of dementia) if she left.
Wrestling with this decision while searching for a mermaid is what drives the story. Respecting the ocean (and its inhabitants) is one of its core underlying messages, as is the value of appreciating and cherishing the stories this stretch of coast has to tell, from the fanciful to the resonantly real.
Above all, the story highlights the importance of a tight-knit community working together in a way that supports young people in overcoming incapacitating cynicism and anxiety in order to embrace the future with courage, optimism and creativity. In this respect, it is emblematic of TAPE and other like-minded organisations in the area and meshes perfectly with the messaging of the Beach of Dreams initiative.
This pennant, designed during the weekly TAPE Art group sessions, is a wonderful snapshot of the richly imaginative response to Below the Waves.
Working alongside other organisations with Kinetika and Jason has not only allowed us to expand on that co-creative ambition but also strengthen those connections and forge new ones.

Yn ddiweddar, mae TAPE Cerdd a Ffilm Cymunedol, sydd wedi’i leoli yn Hen Golwyn, wedi dathlu diwedd cyfnod ymchwil a datblygu ei thrydedd ffilm nodwedd (y cyntaf i gael ei hanimeiddio rhan fwyaf) gydag arddangosfa deithiol o amgylch Gogledd Cymru, sy'n arddangos yr ymateb a gyd-grëwyd ar draws y rhanbarth.
Bydd Below the Waves yn seiliedig ar sgript a gyd-ysgrifennwyd gan dros hanner cant o bobl yn y gymuned leol. Mae wedi’i lleoli o gwmpas tref glan môr Conwy ac yn cael ei hysbrydoli gan dreftadaeth ddiwylliannol gyfoethog arfordir Gogledd Cymru: o felltith môr-forwyn Conwy i chwedl Llys Helyg. Mae’r stori’n dilyn Ffion, merch ifanc sydd eisiau mynd i’r brifysgol ond sy’n poeni beth fyddai’n digwydd i’w nain (anturiaethwraig aflonyddus o’r enw Angharad, sy’n dangos arwyddion o ddementia) pe bai’n gadael. Ymgodymu â'r penderfyniad hwn, tra’n chwilio am fôr-forwyn gyda’i nain, yw sail y stori. Mae parchu’r môr (a’i drigolion) yn un o’i negeseuon craidd, yn ogystal â gwerthfawrogi a choleddu’r hanesion sy’n perthyn i’r darn hwn o arfordir, yn chwedlonol neu fel arall! Yn anad dim, mae’r stori’n amlygu pwysigrwydd cymuned agos yn cydweithio mewn ffordd sy’n cefnogi pobl ifanc i oresgyn sinigiaeth a phryder analluog er mwyn cofleidio’r dyfodol gyda dewrder, optimistiaeth a chreadigedd. Yn hyn o beth, mae'n arwyddluniol o TAPE a sefydliadau tebyg yn yr ardal ac yn cyd-fynd yn berffaith â neges Beach of Dreams.
Mae’r pennant hwn, a ddyluniwyd yn ystod sesiynau wythnosol grŵp Celf TAPE, yn giplun hyfryd o’r ymateb llawn dychymyg i Below the Waves.
Mae gweithio ochr yn ochr â sefydliadau eraill gyda Kinetika a Jason nid yn unig wedi ein hannog i ymhelaethu ar yr uchelgais cyd-greadigol honno ond hefyd i gryfhau (a chreu) cysylltiadau o fewn yr ardal.
