About
Ipswich Waterfront mile
The Ipswich Dry Dock and Waterfront area has been the origins and focus of Ipswich’s history since Anglo Saxon times. This area was and is the driving force of the Town’s prosperity through trade, industry and now leisure. These dock sides have seen a thriving maritime and industrial dominance, which declined in the 20th Century and has now become a hot stop for people to enjoy the waterside location.
If these docks could speak they would tell of ships and sailors arriving from all over the world, of emigrants leaving for the New World, of hard working men, whose families lived in the slums nearby, of noise, smoke, smells of an industrial past, of war work for women and enemy bombings and then the transition to sailing, entertainment, dining, education, culture and waterside living.
What do these docks say to you?
